Barbara was born to muggles. Roger Gorden is an officer of the law while Anita is a successful designer for a French company that has a branch in London. Babs grew up in America until she was five, when the family moved to London, England for Anita's job.
Babs grew up privileged, constantly enrolled in activities such as Gymnastics, martial arts and sports (which she still continues during summer holidays. This didn't turn her into a brat-- not in the sense of money anyway. She loves to help the communities and will be more than willing to give up a prada bag if it meant she could help feed someone.
Her parents were protective of her-- mostly her father. It's because of this that she's took self defense classes(on top of the fact that her father is an officer). She firmly believes in right and wrong and possesses a steady moral compass. She wanted to pursue her father's legacy but he insists that law enforcement wasn't for her. But you can't help what you were born to do. If she couldn't be an enforcer of the law in the muggle world than she was going to do it in her world.
Having decided to become an auror, Babs focused all her studies for the career, by the time she graduated and was starting Auror training, she was in too deep for anyone to stop her.
She's very light hearted and vivacious with keen detective and stealth skills. If you was a precise job done right without any faults, than she's the one to do it. Often her demeanor and appearance lead her opponents to underestimate her-- a mistake they regret after they've been locked away in Azkaban for their crimes.
She also has a temper and when on the job? She tends to be serious.
